Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) Training

This training aims to introduce participants to the fundamental principles and application approach of the HAZOP methodology, which is an advanced risk assessment technique. Participants gain theoretical knowledge on the planning, execution, and documentation of HAZOP studies, while also developing practical awareness of the methodology through hands-on exercises.

Day 1 – HAZOP Fundamentals and Standard Approach

• The role of process safety and HAZOP
• Fundamental principles of the HAZOP methodology
• Overview of standards
• HAZOP terminology
• Comparison of HAZOP with other PHA techniques
• HAZOP team structure and roles
• Required data and documents for a HAZOP study

Day 2 – Methodology and Depth of Analysis

• Node selection based on P&IDs
• Effective use of guidewords and parameters
• Deviation development techniques
• Cause–effect analysis
• Evaluation of existing layers of protection
• Qualitative risk assessment approach

Day 3 – Advanced Applications and Workshop

• Introduction to the HAZOP–LOPA relationship
• Practical HAZOP study (Process Review and Node Selection – Workshop 1)
• Post-workshop analysis

Day 4 – Application, Reporting, and Quality

• Practical HAZOP study (HAZOP Study for a Specific Process – Workshop 2)
• Evaluation of findings and consideration of actions following the workshop
• Preparation of HAZOP reports and update requirements
• Action tracking approaches and close-out processes
• Common mistakes and critical success factors
